‘Building A Street Picture’
Damien Demolder – Photographer, Journalist, Educator
Monday 30th January 2023 via Zoom
Damien Demolder is a photographer, journalist and educator. He has worked in the photographic publishing industry since 1997, including 15 years at the world’s only weekly photo magazine, Amateur Photographer, where he was editor. He is also a marketing and technology advisor for camera manufacturers, providing consultancy services for market development and brand positioning.
Damien is a judge for a number of competitions, including the Sony World Photo Awards, Take a View (Landscape Photographer of the Year), International Garden Photographer of the Year, and Amateur Photographer of the Year. He writes regularly for DP Review, and British Journal of Photography magazine as well as occasionally for other UK and international photographic magazines and websites. Demonstrating products that he loves to use is a key skill, as is presenting on photographic technique and technical matters.
Damien personally uses a range of equipment, from wooden plate cameras to the latest DSLRs and is also a great fan of the compact system camera. In fact, all products that make good photography more accessible to more people.
In his new talk Damien explains how he breaks the world into visual components, and how he uses those ideas and concepts to focus his and the viewer’s attention in the street photography that he creates. “Of course, decisive moments matter, as do the stories behind each human interaction, but we can’t convey any form of message in our pictures unless people look at them. Surely our first step must be to make sure what we show is eye-catching and exciting.”
